What actually happens inside your ear

A thirty-second tour of a blocked ear — and how microsuction clears it without a drop of water. Press play, or step through the chapters.

OUTER EAR EAR CANAL EARDRUM COCHLEA WAX BUILD-UP
Chapter one — the blocked earWax builds up deep in the canal.
In plain words: microsuction is a tiny, gentle vacuum used under magnification. Nothing is pushed into the ear and no water is flushed through it, which is why it is considered the safest routine method of ear wax removal — including for people with perforated eardrums or hearing aids.
02Why a pharmacy clinic

Clinical standards, high-street convenience

GP surgeries around Crewe rarely offer wax removal on the NHS any more. We built this clinic inside a regulated community pharmacy so you can be seen properly, quickly and affordably.

Pharmacist-led & regulated

The clinic operates inside Crewe Pharmacy — GPhC-registered premises (No. 1029608) under superintendent pharmacist Muhammad Usman Shafique. Trained clinicians, clinical-grade equipment, proper records.

On Nantwich Road, near the station

139-141 Nantwich Road is a short walk from Crewe railway station, on main bus routes, with on-street and nearby parking. Easy to reach from Nantwich, Sandbach, Alsager and across South Cheshire.

Fixed prices, no upsell

£50 for one ear, £70 for both — that's it. Every appointment includes an examination of both ears first, and if nothing needs removing we tell you so honestly and advise you on what to do instead.

03Is it wax?

The tell-tale signs of a wax-blocked ear

  • Hearing suddenly muffled — like a hand over the ear
  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in the canal
  • Your own voice sounding boomy or echoing
  • Whistling hearing aids, or aids that seem weaker
  • Ringing, buzzing or crackling sounds (tinnitus)
  • Mild earache or itchiness without infection signs
  • Ears blocking up after swimming or showering
Quick answer: if your hearing dropped gradually or right after water got in, and there's no fever or discharge, impacted ear wax is the most common cause. An examination takes minutes and costs nothing extra — it's built into every appointment at our Crewe clinic.

Sudden hearing loss with pain, dizziness or discharge is different — that needs urgent medical attention rather than wax removal. If we spot anything that looks like infection or an eardrum problem when we examine you, we'll say so and point you to the right service.

04The visit

Three steps to clear ears

Soften for a few days

Use olive oil drops or spray twice daily for 2–3 days before you come in. It loosens the wax so removal is quicker and gentler. No time to prepare? Come anyway — it usually still works.

Examination first

The clinician inspects both ears under magnification and shows you what's there. You only proceed — and only pay for removal — if wax is actually the problem.

Gentle microsuction

The wax is lifted out with fine, low-pressure suction. Most ears are clear within 10–15 minutes, and you can drive, work and hear — often dramatically better — straight away.

07Questions

Asked at the counter every week

Most patients get an appointment within a few days, and same-week slots are usually available. Book online to see the live diary and grab the next opening instantly, or call 01270 215837.
You'll hear whooshing or crackling as the suction works close to the eardrum, and it can feel briefly ticklish or cool. It's not normally painful — and the clinician stops the moment anything feels wrong.
No. This is a private pharmacy clinic, so you book directly. Many of our patients come to us precisely because their GP surgery no longer offers wax removal on the NHS.
Olive oil drops or spray, twice a day for two to three days before your visit. Softened wax lifts out faster and more comfortably. Full guidance is on our preparation page.
We examine both ears before removing anything. If wax isn't the problem, we'll show you what we can see, explain the likely cause and tell you honestly whether you need your GP instead.
Very much so. Hearing aids and moulds encourage wax build-up, and because microsuction is completely water-free you can normally put your aids straight back in after the appointment.
